Everyone needs a photographer at some point. I am searching for one for my daughters upcoming wedding in 2026. And believe it or not, it is a daunting task, and I am lucky enough to have many friends in the business. Here are a few ideas to assist you in choosing the right photographer for your event and to capture those memories for you, and ones that I am following right now for my search.
Technical expertise: We can all take good pictures on the Auto or Program settings, but you want someone that can still capture that photograph in less than ideal situations. Sometimes more equipment doesn't necessarily mean a better photographer and can actually impede their progress on YOUR day. The management of equipment and efficiency is of utmost importance to capture that perfect shot for you.
Creativity: Sounds silly, because most photographer are the creative sort and matching their creative style to what you are looking for takes time and research. Desire, knowledge, and effort, go into making amazing and beautiful photos, look for that in your choice of photographers. Ask to see entire galleries, good and bad, processed and unprocessed photos.
Budget: Having a budget set prior to looking can certainly reduce heartache and streamline the process for you. Understand what you are getting for your money in terms of time, number of locations, prints, or digital download only and ask if there are any other fees so you are not surprised later. I showed my daughter a photographer that I am a huge fan, and she immediately wanted them for her wedding, explaining to her that a London based wedding photographer might now fit our budget was fun.
Check reviews: Look for reviews and check them out. If possible, speak to others that have used that photographer and discuss what their experience was with them. How was the photographer leading up to the booking, during the shoot, and after the event? Responsiveness, courtesy, post sale follow up, just a few things to inquire about.
Ask questions: Do not be afraid to ask questions of the photographer, we are here to help you enjoy your day. Also, expect questions from the photographer as well, what is important to you, who is important (is Aunt Sally suffering from declining health and you have very few photos), do you want posed shots or more candid photos.
Make sure your comfortable with them: Being comfortable with your photographer and having tension with them can change the overall mood and demeanor that comes through in the photos. If your personalities mesh, that is wonderful, not only for your but also your photographer. However, if they don't, that can lead to a very long day of awkwardness and tension.
Photo expertise: Many photographers specialize in one, or a couple, or different photo styles and make sure your event aligns with their style. For your wedding you may want steer clear of a photographer that specializes in nature or landscape photography, conversely, a wedding photographer may not be the best choice for a real estate shoot.
Remember, this is supposed to be fun, whether it is a wedding, senior portraits, family portraits, and another event. Choosing the right photographer will go a long way to making that day unforgettable.
